i grew up in colorado and i was taken with the thick and sharp thistles that were stiff and green but with a surprising, soft, poof of purple on top. so i've been playing with that idea. also, thinking that a thistle, both tough and beautiful could grow out of us. our need for protection from all that is harmful but also, our need for beauty. for visual respite from all things bland.
